Icon Ventures

Icon Ventures

Icon Ventures is a ‘Silicon Valley’ based information technology investor with headquarters in Palo Alto, California. It was previouisly named Jafco Ventures and re-branded during 2015. The company has a 10 year track record of broad-based information technology venture investment across four prior funds. In total, Icon manages over US$780m of capital and has acheived 26 successful exits including 5 IPOs.

CAPNZ is assisting Icon with raising capital for its sixth fund; ICON-VI which is expected to close in March 2016.

In CAPNZ’s opinion, Icon represents a compelling way of accessing high growth US technology businesses through a strategy which has yielded strong returns while managing investment risks. The Icon funds are effectively a Fund of co-investments alongside elite US VC firms that are extremely difficult to access for new LP investors. The highly skilled Icon team is able to access significant diligence from the firms they co-invest alongside.

In late 2013, CAPNZ assisted Icon Ventures in raising capital from NZ investors for its fifth fund - JTP-V. This Fund was heavily oversubscribed and CAPNZ was pleased to have negotiated access for key clients. JTP-V is now completing its investment cycle.

All the Icon and Jafco funds have the same investment strategy; investment into US information technology companies at ‘B’ or ‘C’ series equity rounds, generally as a co-investment alongside the elite Silicon Valley VC firms. Icon Ventures has invested alongside Accel Partners, Benchmark Capital, Bessemer Venture Partners, Greylock Partners, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, New Enterprise Associates, Redpoint Ventures and Sequoia Capital. This strategy enables Icon to:

  • develop co-investment rights through Jafco’s skilled team, deep market relationships, and wide connections through Jafco Co
  • focus on the most promising deals from the elite tier of VC firms,
  • reduce the period of negative cash flow (“J-curve”) typical of early stage investment funds by targeting later venture stage investment (B and C round),
  • deliver a shorter path to exit (average 3.6 years for prior funds).
